My name is Brenda Valenzuela. I’ve been the Center Director at Mansfield Child Development Center since 2003, and employed at Child Care Associates for 27 years. I started as a teacher and became an assistant director and then, center director.
I first became involved with the Head Start Program in Seattle, Washington in 1975 as a parent of a child with special needs. That child is now a college graduate. I served on the Policy Council and worked as a substitute teacher. I discovered that I really loved working with the children and families in Head Start. I was hired as a full time teacher, went to college and received my teaching certification from Washington State.
After relocating to Texas in 1981, I became a teacher and advanced to Center Director at Ash Crescent Child Development Center. I continued my education to receive a Child Development Associate Credential as well as an Advanced Management Certificate from Texas Woman’s University.
The everyday operation of the center brings many challenges but also great fulfillment. When I look back and see positive outcomes, such as a former student graduating from college or helping a family go from being homeless to home owner, it makes it all worth while.
